A year before her passing, my Mom was invited to speak at the 50th Anniversary Reunion of Delta Center High School in Walls, Mississippi. She was described as well groomed, articulate, approachable with an encouraging smile, or was it a grin? The staff and students were elated that she agreed to represent the former faculty during the unveiling of a Mississippi Department of Archives and History - Historical Marker honoring Ole Delta Center School.
So dignified and eloquent and well groomed, she was cheered loudly and affectionately. She was the moment!!! But the biggest cheer went up when she announced that at 90 years old, she had driven herself from her home in Memphis to Walls for the occasion. What resiliency!
The Anniversary Committee and dozens of former students expressed their fondness and respect for their former teacher and the impact she had on their lives. The Committe Chair noted that she was a woman whose intuition and beauty in her devotion to duty --- was even more radiant - 50 years later.
This fund continues the legacy of Hester Richardson Powell and her passion for education and service.
Her zeal for life was evident in her passion for learning, traveling, helping others, and in her endearing sense of humor.
We want to support young women, who similar to Hester, are resilient and intentionally support those around them.
