Our goal

Established in California by lifelong Metalhead and science fan Jose Mangin, Headbang For Science is the first Heavy Metal and science/medicine scholarship award ever. It came to him in a vivid dream while living in New Jersey back in 2014, to him it was a calling to give back to under represented students in the same unique situation that he was in. An excellent student, wanting to pursue a career in Pharmacy, and who worshiped Metal music. Mangin always said if it weren’t for his pursuit of a graduate education in Pharmacy, he wouldn’t be in the blessed position that he is in today as the world’s Metal Ambassador. Wanting to give back to the Metal and science community, help encourage students to pursue their academic goals, this is the ultimate way to encourage higher education while waving the flag of Metal at the same time. With a Board of Directors that include a Grammy award winning artist, the biggest rock festival promoter, and individuals from various backgrounds in the music/medical industry, the annual scholarship winners will have lots of public supporters helping to motivate and push them to become what we know they can be… successful headbangers. By winning this scholarship award, students will become part of an elite group of horn throwing alumni who are being championed by leaders in Metal music and fans alike. The Headbang For Science scholarship award is open to all high school seniors, undergrads & grad students who identify as a “Metalhead,” and designed to encourage study in the healthcare field and the physical sciences. Eligible applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, financial need and a deep passion for Heavy Metal music.
