Our goal

Created by Lo Carter of The Hag Doctor® Project, The Goths Belong in STEM Scholarship seeks to support and affirm alternative-presenting students who are pursuing higher education in STEM fields. This scholarship is founded on the belief that STEM fields are stronger, more innovative, and more compassionate when supportive of the diverse spectrum of human cultures and communities. Alternative-presenting students—students with visible piercings, tattoos, or subcultural-related dress—bring unique strengths and perspectives to their fields. Yet, stigma and lack of representation can lead communities with immense potential to wrongfully question whether they belong in professional fields. The Goths Belong in STEM Scholarship seeks to support and affirm alternative-presenting students pursuing higher education in STEM fields, with the hope that it not only breaks down financial barriers, but acts as an affirmation—that alternative students and professionals bring value to their fields, that their presence is a force for change, and that the future of STEM is brighter with them in it Any undergraduate or graduate student pursuing STEM, including healthcare or mortuary sciences, may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they consistently present with an alternative style (visible tattoos, piercings, goth/punk/alt style, etc.) and have experienced stigma or barriers due to their appearance or identity. Applications will tentatively open January 2026. Any undergraduate or graduate student pursuing STEM may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they consistently present with an alternative style (visible tattoos, piercings, goth/punk/alt style, etc.) and have experienced stigma or barriers related to their appearance or identity.
