Our story
Dr. Maletta was born on June 8, 1938 in Paterson, NJ. Dr. Maletta graduated from Paterson Eastside High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he was also a varsity letterman in baseball. Dr. Maletta obtained his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in physiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Medical Degree from Case Western Reserve University. After completing his residency in psychiatry, Dr. Maletta served as Director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and later as its Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care. Dr. Maletta was also a longstanding Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Among his many achievements, Dr. Maletta was a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists and co-authored the widely used textbook "Principles and Practices of Geriatric Psychiatry." Dr. Maletta died as he had lived: with remarkable integrity, an indomitable spirit and faith, and grateful for a life enriched by enduring friendships and a love of his chosen vocation.
Our goal
I'd like to open the Gabe J. Maletta Memorial Scholarship for Mental Health to my family, friends, and members of the community who feel it is a cause they want to support. The scholarship's goal is to encourage those that are seeking to enter mental health fields with preference to those who are disadvantaged or have a mental health experience with themselves or a loved one.
