Our story

Coco was more than just a beloved figure in our community; she was a tireless advocate for safe spaces and a beacon of hope and positivity. She was one of the first entertainers for generations of patrons at Halo and at least 25 classes of TAMU, Blinn, and SHSU. Coco’s contributions to our community were unparalleled. Whether she was donating her time at the Pride Prom, raising funds for charitable organizations such as the Pride Community Center and Six Kittens Rescue, or encouraging everyone to support local businesses in times of need, Coco always went above and beyond to give back. Coco was the friend that everyone not only wanted, but needed. She was always there for support, whether you needed a shoulder to cry on, or to be read to filth to get your act together. She made it a point to make it to every birthday, wedding, baby shower, or even to stop by to give your pup some sweet love before their final days. She had the heart that, alone, could heal this world if we just had a little more time. Even after her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, Coco's unyielding positivity and zeal for life shone through. She defied the odds, not just surviving but thriving, continuing her mission and spreading light until the very end. Coco, your bright light and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Thank you for everything you have done for our community. You have impacted more lives than you could ever know.

Our goal

We are excited to announce the creation of The Diva of Halo Legacy Scholarship in honor of the beloved Jerry Lopez, also known as Coco Chanel. Coco was a beacon of light in our community, passionately advocating for safe spaces and artistic freedom. She empowered young queer individuals to feel seen and valued, and everyone who met her felt important. In July 2024, we lost Coco to pancreatic cancer. To honor her legacy of giving back, we are establishing The Diva of Halo Legacy Scholarship. This scholarship will support young members of the LGBTQIA+ community with expenses related to education, healthcare, or overall quality of life. We seek recipients who embody Coco's values: 1) love your community, 2) treat people with kindness, and 3) always lend a helping hand. We are looking to host an annual memorial drag show to help replenish the scholarship fund. Starting with a $2,500 scholarship, we aim to support one deserving applicant each year. This event will not only celebrate Coco’s vibrant spirit but also ensure that her legacy of giving back continues to thrive within our community.

As a business, Halo wanted to organize a memorial show to honor Coco. This donation is the funds we raised from that show.
