Our story

David Thomas Blythe lived 43 years with a spirit that refused to be defined by his challenges. He faced the profound and often invisible weight of mental health struggles and substance use battles that millions fight alone. David did not fight alone. He had his parents and siblings beside him with their endless love and support. David's life was a testament to resilience. The kind that doesn't always look like triumph, but shows up anyway, again and again, in the quiet courage of simply continuing to try. This scholarship will be awarded in his resilient and giving spirit. David had several helpers throughout his life that connected with him. We are grateful for each one of them. However, we must acknowledge that there were many times when wait lists, decisions made by insurance companies, red tape, lack of funding, and/or a lack of knowledge created barriers to David receiving care.

Our goal

The David Thomas Blythe Scholarship's goal is to support future "Helpers." We need them now more than ever. David's family established this scholarship to support the brave and passionate individuals who want to work in fields that help those who are often ignored, judged, under resourced and/or mistreated. Any high school senior at Ridley High School in Pennsylvania (pending school board approval) may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they have experience helping others (volunteer or paid) within their communities. This scholarship has a strong preference for students who are pursuing a degree in counseling, social work, psychology, human services, and/or public health. Applicants who will be first-generation college students will also be given a preference, but it is not a requirement. Applicants with a GPA of 3.0 or higher will be given a preference. Recipients will be selected anonymously by a board of several people.
