Our story

My son, Charles, was very loved by all who knew him. He had a great love of reading, history, and was extremely intelligent as well as thoughtful and compassionate. He was just beginning to embark on his educational and career goals and had found a passion for working in mental health and hoped to go to college to pursue becoming a nurse in the field. Unfortunately, he also struggled with his own mental health and died by suicide at the age of 19. He is missed beyond measure by his family, friends, and all who knew him. My mother, Kathleen, was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, and educator. She was also a counselor for elementary school children and had a master's degree in psychology. She dedicated her career to helping children to navigate mental health challenges at an early age. She was able to do this while living with bipolar disorder. Over her life, she benefitted from the kindness and expertise of those in the mental health field while pursuing her own place in it. Sadly, we lost her to dementia just a month after Charles died.

Our goal

I am hoping to raise funds for a scholarship i am creating in honor and memory of my son, Charles, and mother, Kathleen. The goal of this scholarship is to provide support to students going into the mental health field of nursing. There is a great need for nurses, and particularly for those dedicated to the specialty of psychiatric/behavioral health nursing care. My son, Charles, was working in mental health at the time of his death by suicide. My mother had a dedicated career in psychology while living with bipolar. To honor them, I would like to help students in their journey to becoming nurses who will make a difference in this challenging but rewarding career choice.
