Our story

Barbara was a devoted mother and a caring teacher. She was beautiful inside and out, radiating kindness, patience, and strength in everything she did. She made all her students feel loved and accepted, creating a classroom where every child felt seen, valued, and capable. To know her was to love her. Her students worked hard to become what Barbara already believed them to be, because she saw their potential even before they could see it themselves.

Our goal

This scholarship honors the memory of our dear friend and colleague, Barbara Kalinowski, who was a kindergarten teacher in West Babylon, New York and whose life and work continue to inspire us. The scholarship committee has always believed in rewarding effort and not necessarily the outcome. In over 30 years of combined experience in education, we have often wished there were more recognition for the hard-working students for whom good grades did not come easily. We would like to support students from Suffolk County, New York, who may have struggled in elementary school but, through perseverance and resilience, have strengthened their study skills and become successful college-bound students. This mission is especially meaningful to us because of our shared dedication to supporting struggling learners, including those in remedial math. One of our greatest hopes is to see students pursue higher education, experience the joy of learning, and grow into successful, contributing citizens.
