Our story
My mother, Anita Moore-Hubbard, was my best friend and my first home. There is something sacred about the fact that she held me when I took my first breath, and I was blessed to be holding her hand when she took her last. Everything I do now is rooted in the love she gave me and the lessons she lived every day.
Anita’s journey began in Mount Vernon, Alabama, where she poured care and patience into young learners in the local elementary schools. That path of service continued at Norfolk State University, where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1971 and volunteered with the Special Olympics—already living out her belief that kindness and action should always walk hand in hand. In Chicago, Anita spent more than 25 years at the City Colleges of Chicago, serving as a college counselor, proctor, and adjunct professor. She was a constant bridge for students reaching toward their next level.
Though she was a French major who dreamed of seeing the world, Anita chose to stay grounded to build a life for us. Still, she never allowed her own journey to limit mine. She was my constant encouragement—saving every postcard, following every trip, and celebrating my travels as if they were her own. While she remained anchored, she made sure I always had the wings to fly.
Anita believed no act of kindness was ever too small, whether it was supporting athletes, guiding students through uncertainty, or quietly showing up when someone needed a steady presence. Butterflies captured her imagination because they represented transformation—and that is exactly what she offered so many people: the chance to grow, to change, and to imagine more for themselves. This scholarship is my way of carrying my mother’s grace and curiosity forward, ensuring that her spirit continues to travel by lifting the next generation of students as they find their own wings.
Our goal
I am establishing this fund to honor the life of my mother, Anita Moore-Hubbard (1949–2014). For over 25 years, my mother served as a dedicated teacher, college advisor, and professor, acting as a bridge between her students and their future successes. Although she was a French major who dreamed of international service and global travel, her journey remained domestic, rooted in her service to the Chicago community. Despite being "anchored" by life’s responsibilities, she never stopped archiving dreams—collecting every itinerary and story I shared with her and encouraging her students to view the world as their own.
As I navigate a transitional period in my own professional life, I am moved by her lifelong conviction that no act of kindness is too small. I am personally contributing to this fund because I believe in the "Butterfly Effect"—the idea that a single gesture of support can permanently alter the trajectory of a student's life.
My immediate goal is to secure a minimum of $500 to launch the inaugural Anita Moore-Hubbard "Butterfly Effect" Scholarship for the 2025-2026 academic year.
This fund is designed to be a community-driven effort. While the initial award is set at $500, this is only the foundation. Every dollar raised beyond this goal will directly increase the scholarship amount, providing even greater financial "wings" to a deserving African American high school senior from Illinois. By exceeding this target, we can offer more substantial support for tuition, books, or the travel expenses that allow a student to explore the world my mother so dearly loved.
Through this fund, I aim to foster a network of scholars who lead with empathy and curiosity. Anita Moore-Hubbard may not have walked every land she dreamed of, but through our collective efforts, we ensure her students have the resources to reach the heights she imagined for them. We are turning her legacy into a vehicle for intergenerational dreams, ensuring that her spirit of service continues to travel across borders.
