Our goal
My mom, Angela Engelson, was the seventh of nine children raised on Long Island, New York in the 1950s and 1960s. She exhibited a talent for art at a young age, but was unable to receive the support needed to pursue her dream. Her family struggled financially, and women were guided to become secretaries right out of high school. College was not an opportunity that was afforded to her.
She went on the marry and have two children. She was a very talented hobby artist who mastered oil painting (mostly still lifes and landscapes), portraiture, and graphic illustration. After a divorce in 1982, she focused on surviving and helping her children thrive. She remarried in 1987 and forged a close-knit blended family. It was a huge source of pride that two parents who had not attended college raised four children who all have masters degrees.
One of her life-long sadnesses was missing out on college, where she would have studied art. Angela passed away in late 2024 and about a week before she died, her family told her they would start a scholarship fund in her name to support other young women with limited financial resources who wish to study art.
