Our story

Amos began his career as a luthier in 1974 at the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City. Although never boastful, his craftsmanship was awarded four gold medals from the Violin Society of America between 1980 and 1982 and was designated Hors Concours status in 1984. Amos’s skills and attention to detail were exceptional; he was highly sought after as a master restorer. He never rushed and nothing left his bench until he was satisfied. He was a teacher and mentor to many aspiring violin makers and restorers.

Our goal

This fund is a memorial for Amos Blynn Hargrave. He was a celebrated luthier who attended the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City, Utah. His time at the school was very dear to him and he also would have benefited from financial support while he was in school. We would love to offer this opportunity to a young, aspiring luthier.

I met Amos when I was an undergrad at the North Carolina School of the Arts, and he was so generous and patient with his time, and always kept my cello sounding its best. He always inspired me as a craftsman.

When I was moving to Kansas City 31 years ago, I asked the person in New York who worked on my violin, Carlos Arcieri, if he knew anyone in the KC area who could do work on my violin if needed. He said Amos Hargrave without hesitation. Amos not only did fabulous work on my violin but for countless other friends and students. I only heard wonderful things about his craftsmanship and personality. I am truly blessed to have known him all these years and certainly will miss him very much.
