Mission

The mission of the Hines Minority Scholarship is to help minority high school and undergraduate students reduce educational debt and gain access to higher education opportunities. My passion for this work is rooted in personal experience. As a high school student, I didn’t always prioritize academics and graduated with a 2.0 GPA. While I knew I wanted to attend college, my grades limited my options. I was accepted to one private institution, attended for a single semester, and incurred unnecessary student debt — without the support of outside scholarships. This experience shaped my commitment to ensuring that minority students understand they still have options. Academic setbacks do not define potential, and access to education should not be determined by perfection. Through this scholarship, my goal is to provide financial relief, expand opportunity, and remind students that their future is still within reach — even if their journey doesn’t look traditional.

I am incredibly grateful for you and the scholarship you are offering me. As a first-year undergraduate student, it has been extremely challenging to balance school and work while trying to cover all my educational expenses. This scholarship will be a valuable resource to help pay off student loans and housing costs. As a minority, I aspire to be like you in the future, supporting others who find themselves in similar situations. Once again, thank you so much for this scholarship. I truly appreciate it.

Dear Kristin, I want to sincerely thank you for selecting me as a recipient of the Hines Scholarship. Knowing that you believe in my potential and want to support underrepresented students like myself brings me so much encouragement. This scholarship truly eases my financial worries as I prepare to begin my college journey. Because of your generosity, I can focus more on my classes and less on how I’ll afford them. With less stress about debt, I’m able to put my energy into my studies and community involvement, which means so much to me. Growing up with autism and other physical disabilities, I’ve learned the importance of persistence. You have no idea how much your scholarship is going to help me -- my mom was diagnosed with cancer a little over a year ago, and the medical bills are adding up. This scholarship will help take the stress and strain off my family. Thank you so much! Your desire to help minority students become debt-free is so important. I actually wrote a research paper for English this past semester about the importance of making college debt-free for all students. It’s comforting and motivating to know that someone understands that we all face unique challenges but still deserve the chance to succeed. I can’t wait to use my education to make a positive difference in young students’ lives, just as you’re making in mine. I’m incredibly grateful for your support. Your kindness inspires me to give back and make the most of the opportunities ahead. Thank you for helping me take my next step forward. Thank you, Nicholas Maum

Dear Kristin, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for being chosen as a recipient of the Hines Scholarship. Your belief in supporting students who face unique challenges means so much to me, especially as someone determined to overcome every obstacle I face on the path to my higher education and future career. Receiving this scholarship truly eases my financial worries and empowers me to focus on my psychology studies and my family. As a mother of three, including Jayden, my 5-year-old son with autism, the journey has not always been easy, especially with limited resources in our community and no family support. Your generosity lets me concentrate on my education while continuing to advocate for my son and others who need support. My dream is to become a licensed ABA Therapist so I can help children like Jayden and make a lasting difference in our community. Your own story and commitment to uplifting minority students, regardless of their academic background, deeply resonate with me. Knowing there are people like you who understand and want to open doors for others is truly inspiring. Thank you for your kindness and for making it possible for me to pursue my goals. Your support brings hope not just to me, but also to my son Jayden and the families I hope to serve in the future. Thank you, Evita Andon

Being a winner for me as a young Hispanic Latina that has came from nothing to a family that has given me and done everything for me to have everything I need in my education, is everything I could ever ask for. I could not be more grateful to be seen and chosen to be a potential winner and I could not give enough a thank you for believing in me and seeing so much potential, so that I’m able to further my education in the future and give my all to give back to my community and loved ones, Thank you so much again.
