Mission

As a nurse who entered healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic, I quickly learned the emotional weight of caring for patients through suffering, loss, and end-of-life journeys. From adult oncology and hospice care to pediatric oncology and pediatric palliative care, I experienced both the privilege and heartbreak of supporting patients and families through their most difficult moments. Along the way, I discovered that finding people who truly understood those experiences was often the hardest part. Unexpectedly, I found healing and community within the rock, metal, and alternative music scene. The music provided a healthy outlet for processing grief, resilience, and survival, while connecting me with others who shared similar experiences. That connection inspired me to create Music as Medicine, a community of healthcare professionals who use alternative music as a source of mental wellness, support, and belonging. Our mission is to challenge stereotypes, reduce burnout, and build meaningful connections among healthcare professionals and students. Through mentorship, advocacy, and community, we encourage individuals to embrace both their professional calling and their authentic identities. I hope to supports nursing and allied health students whose lives have been shaped by alternative music, recognizing the power of creativity, community, and self-expression to foster resilience and compassionate care. Together, we are proving that healthcare professionals can be both excellent caregivers and passionate members of the alternative music community.
