Mission

The Arnetha V. Bishop, MA, RN, Memorial Scholarship was established by her children and grandchildren to continue her commitment to supporting providers and community members working to raise mental health awareness and making services available to all. Created to honor her life and memory, this fund will provide financial support to graduate students of Color with roots in Central America and throughout the African Diaspora. Recipients will include graduate level students training in related areas (e.g., psychology, psychiatric nursing, social work, marriage and family therapy, etc.).

Dear Austin/Bishop Family, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible honor of receiving the Arnetha V. Bishop Memorial Scholarship. Learning about Arnetha V. Bishop’s legacy and the impact she made in the mental health field inspires me deeply, and I’m honored to carry on her legacy through this scholarship. Support like yours is truly life-changing. This award helps lift a significant financial weight, allowing me to focus fully on my studies at Southern Methodist University, where I’m pursuing my dream of becoming a Licensed Clinical Therapist. With the resources this scholarship provides, I’m one step closer to opening a private practice made up of queer therapists dedicated to serving the LGBTQIA+ community. My hope is to create spaces where individuals can express themselves authentically, access positive gender-affirming care, and find empowerment through support and education. Your family’s generosity in establishing this scholarship reaffirms my commitment to advancing mental health awareness and expanding access to inclusive care. I’m moved by your dedication to ensuring that students of Color from Central America and the African Diaspora have the support needed to make a lasting difference. Your kindness not only propels me forward but also strengthens my resolve to give back and build a legacy of compassion, just as Arnetha V. Bishop did. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this opportunity and for believing in my potential. Thank you, Quincy Dorsey
