Mission

This scholarship aims to support students returning to college as older adults. It is dedicated to the loving memory of my mother, Geneva Mabry, who earned her Associates Degree and Certification in Drug and Alcohol Counseling, walking down that same path and my father, Harvey Mabry, who supported her every step of the way. This scholarship aims to award one winner annually to help them along their educational journey. As we honor my parents' legacy, thank you for allowing us an opportunity to contribute to the legacy you are creating for yourself and those who love and support you.

Dear April, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for being chosen as the recipient of the Harvey and Geneva Mabry Second Time Around Scholarship. It truly means so much to me to be recognized in this way, and I’m sincerely honored to carry on Geneva Mabry’s legacy of perseverance and commitment to education. Returning to college as an adult is both an exciting and challenging journey, and your support has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. This scholarship allows me to focus on my coursework and development as a professional writer without being overwhelmed by financial concerns. As someone who is passionate about writing and hopes to inspire and connect diverse communities, I am driven by the example Geneva Mabry set in pursuing her own dreams later in life. Learning about her achievements and the unwavering support Harvey Mabry provided reminds me how powerful determination and encouragement can be. Your family’s dedication to helping students like me return to school is truly inspiring, and I’m grateful to be part of this legacy. Your kindness and belief in adult learners has made a real difference in my life, and I look forward to the day I can pay this generosity forward to others on their educational journeys. Thank you, Angela Garrett

Hi April! I am very grateful for this award and to feel the support of your generous spirit! Re-entering college after 20 years, has not been an easy transition. I'm filled with drive and determination to continue on this path and complete my first AA in Studio Arts. Awards like these, help me along my path. I feel both supported and divinely guided. I believe that education is the biggest gift I can give myself, and I work every day, piece by piece, to make that happen. Your gift, and the legacy of your parents is deeply felt at this moment. Im about a year from completing my AA in Studio Arts, and every moment I spend in the classroom, I feel like that is exactly where I'm supposed to be. Im very grateful I chose to return to an academic path. I look forward to creating beautiful art for all to enjoy-- threads of your parents will be present in these pieces, I find that to be a beautiful thought. THANK YOU. This is very meaningful. A deep bow of gratitude!
