Hey, I'm Alaina and my goal is to make an impact on how others perceive the world. I hope to make our society more positive and more just for everyone. I also love the arts and having a creative outlet. I have a strong connection with musical theatre. Since I was little I have always loved performing and letting others put a pause on a stressful day and delve into a story through a musical. I also paint and draw to relieve stress and express the beauty of life and nature. Another thing that interests me is political science. Let's be honest, our world needs to change. Change is necessary for a healthy balance in society. I would love to bring change into our government regarding pollution, systematic racisms, climate change, and women's rights. Overall, I try to be the best version of myself every day and hope to help others and make other's day.

I was 5 years old when I became an international student. Enrolled in a school in San Diego, California while residing in the bordering city of Tijuana, I crossed the México-US border daily for more than 7 years in order to attend a school in the United States. The decision was based on the hope that I’d be provided with the best chance of earning a diploma from one of the country’s best universities. However, it was my parents’ contention that even if I did not end up graduating from an American institution, I’d still emerge with something almost equal in value —the English language. My dream job would involve working in politics. If provided with the opportunity in the future, I’d want to create a nation-wide program that would better educate Mexican students in this universal language. While many private institutions already provide a curriculum taught partly in English, the same cannot be said for public schools, most of which lack quality education. The goal would be to implement a program where students would be taught partly by native English speakers. The ability to fluently speak this second language would open doors for students to a wide number of opportunities that wouldn’t require a college degree, something which few citizens can afford. I have seen this in action through the ways of my aunt, a college dropout now working as a translator. Being bilingual would provide students with skills to better themselves, and increase social mobility in a country where opportunities are scarce. I want to play a part in making that opportunity possible.

I am seventeen years old, originally from Nicaragua. I moved to the U.S when I was eleven and am very passionate about issues regarding immigration and human rights. My poem," Foreign Land", which centers around my immigration experience, was published in Skipping Stones Magazine. I have extensively volunteered with the Honduras Foundation and WeTranslate to help immigrants like me in their path to citizenship. Further, I volunteer with Amnesty International to advocate for human rights in the U.S and abroad. My goal is to find a way to create a long-lasting impact in underdeveloped communities affected by environmental change, as I have experienced these communities first hand due to my duality as a Nicaraguan and a Miami resident. My biggest passions are theater and photography, as they both provide me opportunities to tell stories I feel connected to. I was a former competitive equestrian, but I currently practice only recreationally. I love animals and the ocean. I am particularly fond of the horse I habitually ride, my dogs, and the hedgehog in my profile picture.
