Are First and Second-year students required to live on campus?
Willamette University
Yes! Students are required to live on campus during their first two years at Willamette. We find that this really helps students get to know the campus, its resources, and each other well, and this ensures that students feel as supported as possible on campus. Housing is guaranteed all 4 years, so if students would like to continue living on campus after their second year, they're more than welcome to do so. Otherwise, students may choose to move off campus for their last two years.

WHAT I LIKED

I loved the professors, academics, research, and scholarship opportunities! Really take advantage of those student research grants because they are hard to come by. I also loved that classrooms were very small and our professors knew us all by name and we would have coffee/lunch together whenever we wanted to talk about anything. All in all, Willamette was a very close-knit and collegial environment and I took full advantage of that. What's hard sometimes is that because it is so small it's very easy to stay stuck in what's called the "Willamette Bubble" and not branch out. The social scene sometimes wasn't as active as big universities but this was fine with me as I'm not an extremely social person. All in all, a beautiful campus, with wonderful teachers and subjects

WHAT I didn’t LIKE

feels very small sometimes, with nowhere to branch out, the surrounding town of Salem is like falling apart and it doesn't have a "college town" feel

WHAT I LIKED

I really enjoyed how open the school was about its opportunities and its availability to students. I loved how much they are willing to do for future students, as well as incorporating students' opinions and ideas into the campus's daily routine.

WHAT I didn’t LIKE

I think that it being in the middle of the capital should be made more aware to students. The campus is in downtown Salem.
