The University of Guam has helped many students in plenty of ways. Our campus life is very related to our island morale and our Hafa Adai Spirit. With beaches and amazing restaurants nearby, many students have a chance of experiencing life in paradise while learning.
We live on a small island so our necessities are not always up to date and our dorms have not been updated since the 90s.
I liked how it was close to home. I live 7 minutes away from the university since I live in Mangilao. And since I was paying on-island tuition, making mistakes was more economical. For instance, I didn't read the syllabus right after my freshman comprehension professor gave me the rubric. This is a common mistake students have. It left me missing writing assignments because the rubric listed down assignments for the class.
The Civil Engineering degree at UOG is NOT accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Employers look for ABET accreditation when reviewing colleges. It means a degree has value. UOG students in the program would be stuck with jobs in Guam. And if they wish to transfer to a state, it would be difficult to find work. The courses earned at UOG might not transfer even if one transfers to a university granting an ABET-accredited CE degree.
My experience at the University of Guam is very pleasant. I was able to be comfortable while pursuing my degree since most of the students that are in my classes are also students that I have known either in middle school or high school. UOG allows students to grow in a lighter, friendly environment rather than a constricting, authoritarian environment.
Since it is the only university on the island, there are not so many resources when it comes to pursuing higher degrees and some parts of the campus are underdeveloped. By far a complaint that I hear from most students is that the university is infamous for its inability to aware students of certain activities or important deadlines such as tuition and opportunities like work-study on campus.
