Known for
The availability of everything, whether it is tutoring, extracurricular clubs, therapy, mail services, food, class schedule, or advisement appointments. There is even a class that new students are required to take that tells you all the information you need to know about the services the school provides. (it is still boring though). Like all colleges, every professor or TA is different but just about all of them I have had classes with have been great. You can always access them by email and the information you need for projects/essays and due dates is at your disposal at the very start of the semester via the syllabus.
Most of the Math and Chemistry departments are taught by professors with very strong accents which makes it difficult to learn the already complicated material. Most of the classrooms and lecture halls are kept way too warm.
The staff and advisors are very kind and welcoming. Before I even visited campus, I had fellow students and the director of Communications Studies reach out to me. They encourage creative thinkers such as me and have provided help when I have needed it.
The one thing that has concerned me thus far is the parking situation. Student parking is not very close to the main buildings. I have to adjust my schedule to make sure I have plenty of time to walk through campus to get to my classes.
What I like about SIU is if you are struggling with a subject, the library has more than enough tutors to help you. The campus isn’t that big so walking to class doesn’t take forever. Teachers are very helpful and considerate.
I don’t like the dining halls we have a big problem.
SIU provides a great education for all students, I have never experienced any unfairness or inequality on campus, and the campus is beautiful to look at.
Students should be aware of the harsh parking policies.
I have loved attending the extended campus for SIU. although I am not a student in person at the campus, I have visited it plenty of times and am enrolled in their Elementary Education program. While this program is very difficult, you will find that the teachers are competent and willing to help in many ways. The halls of the school were very nice and so were all of the staff. I highly recommend this school to new students as well as transfer students
If you are thinking of joining SIU, please be aware of the intensity of the courses. The courses are very workload heavy but are extremely rewarding in regards to feeling prepared for your future carrier.
I really liked the diversity of Carbondale. Almost everyone is very friendly and you can meet a lot of new people. I have made best friends down there, go to tons of sporting events and go to the on-campus events as well. It is a great place to get an education, make new friends, and enjoy your college experience.
The only part that I do not like is certain areas do not have lights at night so I would beware of those areas, especially if you are by yourself just to ensure safety for yourself and others.
