I moved to the US in June 2019. It has been almost one and a half years. My father and I were the only ones in the family who were able to speak English when we moved here. I grew up in the Hatay province of Turkey, known for its multicultural landscape, where one values and respects different lifestyles. Yet, as everywhere else, Hatay is burdened with poverty and unequal educational opportunities. Even under those opportunities, I am a person that always has a lot of dreams about her future. I am almost on the way to making one of them real by going to university in the US. I have been always hard-working and passionate about what I am doing. My music, dream career, travel goals, and volunteering are the things that fill my heart with happiness. To pass the first step, which is going to university in the US, I needed to work hard, and I can easily say that I did whatever I could and will do until I achieve my goals. The reason why I am presenting myself is to achieve my goal successfully and with less financial aid stress. Even though my college list was filled with need-based universities, entering medical school will be financially hard for me like my other peers who want to be a doctor/healthcare worker. Thank you for spending your time to read about me.

I am a first-generation Hispanic-American, and I will be the first in my family to attend college. I am a person who has a strong intellectual curiosity. I believe that it is very crucial for me to stay engrossed in school and life. Because I was always interested in learning anything and everything, I became very active in my school. I joined a variety of clubs and took on various leadership positions. As a dedicated student, I strive to fuel my intellectual curiosity by seeking information about any subject and thinking of how to apply it to the real world. I am always determined to gain new knowledge, and I spend my free periods and time after school trying new things. Doing well is something I have always had a craving for; for both my satisfaction and for my community. At a young age, I had the desire to affect positive change for my community. To help my community, I started volunteering at local schools. I have also helped several families by teaching them English, how to write, and how to help their children with their schoolwork. In the future, I wish to further help my community by becoming an immigration lawyer. Many people don’t receive the proper representation, and I know that I could be the voice for those who are not heard because of their legal status. My dream of becoming a lawyer can only be completed by having a college education, but it can be a financial burden. If I were to receive an award, I would use it towards my college education to one day bring justice to those living in fear of deportation.

I am confident enough to say that I am a very motivated student. I have always been interested in the sciences, and in my sophomore year of high school, I decided I wanted to push my limits. My school offered a program where students could dual enroll with our local community college, and complete their Associate’s Degree while in high school. Determined, I wanted to be one of the first students in the academy to have a science concentration. As of today, I am in my final semester and will be graduating in May of 2021. Taking on this academy was certainly challenging, but it has pushed me to become the hardest working student I have ever been. Additionally, three years ago my family experienced the loss of my sister, which is something no family should ever have to go through. Throughout her time at the hospital, I met many healthcare professionals, and they made a forever impact on my family by keeping her fighting for as long as possible. I am going into the healthcare field because I want to be a part of the impact those people had on my family, but for thousands of others. Regardless of that experience, I have always been someone who finds joy in helping others. Whether it is going to work with my dad, donating to local shelters, or involving myself in many volunteering events, I always look forward to seeing how impactful it is to offer my assistance. Those moments are so humbling and rewarding and I can only imagine myself doing that time and time again, and I wish to accomplish that as a Nurse and further my studies to eventually be a Nurse Practitioner.
